SAGE MAS 90 ERP Software Review

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

SAGE MAS 90 is an accounting software which has functionality for lean manufacturing and e-commerce but more inclined towards distribution and wholesale and warehouse management. The support for light manufacturing and e-commerce were added later when few more functions were added to the basic software. Initially SAGE MAS 90 was marketed by chartered accountants who used this software for their purposes but now it is marketed and sold by independent software consultants.

SAGE MAS 90 uses file server architecture and can run on windows 2000 and plus versions, this type of architecture limits the number of users as in this either one computer works as dedicated server to provide file sharing or one computer in the environment offer peer to peer file accessing for data storage and retrieval. However SAGE MAS 90 supports ten concurrent users in a LAN environment but its users and experts suggest that if concurrent users are more than five in number than higher version of SAGE shall be preferred. SAGE MAS 90 uses crystal reports for reporting purposes which allows users to create their own reports however few reports for legacy modules are still in hard coded format which are not editable. It is horizontal accounting software which is not supposed to be industry specific but MAS 90 provides vertical solutions for warehouse management and distribution and wholesale industry.

SAG MAS 90 is reliable and has proven track record for strong accounting features. The cost of implementation and IT infrastructure is comparatively low compared to its competitors. With the addition of new features this package now has more versatility and is being used in the light manufacturing industry too. Ease of use has been the biggest USP of SAGE MAS 90 till date and it can operate as a standalone application or on Novell/windows 2000 or 2003 networks for approximately ten users. SAGE MAS 90 is available in many versions however functionality of all the versions is same it is just that these were fine tuned for different situations. This can be quite confusing for a new buyer however all the versions provide downward compatibility for data.

It is claimed by SAGE that MAS 90 can be scaled for 30-40 concurrent users, as it has been developed by using Providex which is windows business basic programming language, quite easily. However this scalability depends upon the kind of data all the users will be feeding in the system. The ebusiness manager module of this accounting software helps in managing e-commerce activities which helps the companies in creating their web presence with lesser cost. Applets provided in the ebusiness manager module ensures secure transfer of data, secured shopping and allows customers to access their status on-line.

The biggest disadvantage of SAGE MAS 90 is that it is based on an old technology and no efforts have been made by the company to resolve this situation. Lack of support for multi-currency, multi-company and inter company consolidations are also a handicap for its users. Few reports are still in hard coded format, support for very few users and database with limited services also limits its scope for large organizations.
